1st year Ski Club Vail athlete J3 Jessie Delacenserie took 8th (2nd among 1993 year racers) competing against many division 1 university racers almost 10 years older!

Enjoy the spring and a break for the gates!

May Master’s Race Camp at Arapahoe Basin

We wanted to take a moment to invite you to an upcoming camp that our good friend and race coach Jim Catalano developed and we are very excited about! It is the 2008 May Master’s Race Camp at Arapahoe-Basin in Colorado. Again this season, A-Basin will host late-season training to Master’s athletes and club program athletes. This is the perfect opportunity to fine-tune your skills and mechanics or learn some new secrets. The staff brings first-hand experience, from FIS to USSA racing. This camp is an excellent opportunity to get in a great deal of free skiing and gate training mileage on a wide variety of terrain and snow conditions. The focus of the camp is on honing and refining technical and tactical skills with an emphasis on fundamentals. They will do a high volume of supervised free skiing, drills, GS and SL training. The camp will have private lane space for all of their gate training. A great head start to the Master’s Summer Nationals.

The dates of the camp are May 22nd – 27th, 2008. The camp includes the following: lift tickets, private training lane, coaching, video analysis, conditioning and nutrition advice and more. Transportation, Lodging and Meals are NOT included.

They are inviting masters and college level racers and instructors ages 18 and up to enroll. The camp is limited to the first 15 who register. The low athlete-to-coach ratio will allow personal and quality training for each individual. REGISTRATION CLOSES MAY 1, 2008.

The Loveland Derby

Competitors throughout the United States are preparing for the last amateur slalom event of the year. The oldest and largest alpine race in North America returns to Loveland Ski Area, April 12 – 13, 2008.

Typically fielding 400-500 competitors, The Loveland Derby attracts racers from as far away as Alaska and Florida to compete in the final points race of the season in Colorado. Varsity ski team members for the University of Colorado and the University of Denver will be setting the pace.

The 48th Annual Loveland Derby will be held at the Loveland Valley on four courses spread across three trails. Contestants must be licensed USSA members of any age.

The Loveland Derby is an all-volunteer initiative and begins Saturday, April 12th at 9:30 a.m. The festivities conclude Sunday at approximately 4:00 p.m. with an awards ceremony. The Derby has long been known as the race of the year to attend. Many athletes compete to lower their total points and obtain a better seed for next season’s early races, while others have been known to show up in costumes celebrating the end of another long racing season.

We hope our SRD racers can grab a few final podiums!

On the recreational racing end of things SRD had some great results at the recently held 2008 NASTAR National Championships at Steamboat Springs Colorado. MSR’s own Gary Dranow skiing with a broken ankle took a Silver in the Men’s 50-54 Platinum division!

|| Bob Morris – Canadian Racing Machine!

Ageless Vail local Robert “Bob” Morris in one of our SRD Vuarnet French National Team suits and Dainese helmet skied to a Gold in the Men’s 75-79 Platinum division. At age 76, Bob is a Masters and NASTAR racing legend with a long history in the sport. One of SRD’s biggest fans!

|| Margot and Liz – Twin daughters of different mothers!

Not to miss out, Dr. Liz Dranow skied to a Bronze medal in the Woman’s 35-39 Platinum division. Finally, Margot Kaminski took Gold in the Woman’s 21-29 Platinum division! Great skiing to all!

Delacenserie Tops at Smartwool Finals

SRD and Ski & Snowboard Club Vail’s Jessica Delacenserie moved up two spots in her final run to take first in a slalom Friday at the Smartwool finals in Winter Park.

Delacenserie, who was almost one second out of first place after her first run, had the fastest second run to finish in 2 minutes, 5.64 seconds, just 0.05 ahead of teammate Greta Byrne, who took silver.

Both Delacenserie and Byrne are J3s and were tops among a field with plenty of J2 and J1 racers.

In Thursday’s giant slalom race, Byrne took second, while Delacenserie was third. Great way to finish the season Jess!
